Cecil Road School - a brief history

In June 1909 the Cecil Road Schools were opened.  The boys and girls were in separate accommodation.  The first Headmistress of the girls’ school was Miss Bundle who was appointed at the age of 27.  The first Headmaster of the boys’ school was Mr Pearson.  The majority of the staff that were appointed to the school came from Kempthorne Street School.  Certain teachers at that time were only earning £10 a year.

In 1988 the KCC Education Committee decided to amalgamate Cecil Road Infant and Junior Schools.  The new Cecil Road Primary School began life on 1 January 1990 under a newly appointed Headteacher.

The new Cecil Road Primary School occupies the former junior and infant buildings and the new nursery accommodation.  The infant building is now known as the Lower School and the junior building is known as the Upper School.

Grants

A very important event in the pre-history of Cecil Road Schools was a system of grants for building new primary schools. This followed the liberal landslide of 1906. The government set about reforming elementary education, introducing free school meals in 1906, a code to improve the quality of education in 1907 and then £100,000 of grants for new school buildings.

This incredible picture was taken at the Perry Street end of Northcote Road around about 1910.  You can clearly see the imposing Cecil Road School building in the background.  If this photo is dated accurately, then the school would have only just been built.  It is also very likely that the children in this picture would have been some of the first  pupils at Cecil Road Schools.
